Holi Events in New Jersey
Holi Hai! Find out where all the best places are to celebrate Holi in New Jersey. I have listed below free events, events with a fee and ways to celebrate Holi at home.
What is Holi?
Holi is the Hindu Festival of Colors. It is a celebration of the start of Spring and the triumph of good over evil. It is well-known for its celebration that includes color play with colored powders and colored water.
What are the origins of Holi?
One story involving the origin of Holi involves Radha and Krishna. Krishna is the eighth incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu and Radha is an incarnation of the goddess Lakshmi. Krishna and Radha were childhood friends. Krishna had blue skin and told his mom that he was worried Radha would not love him. She told him to put some colored powder on her face. He playfully put some gulal powder on her face. This led to the tradition of using colored powders on Holi.
When is Holi?
Holi is celebrated on the last full moon of the Hindu calendar month Phalguna. This year Holi will be celebrated on March 14th, 2025.
What do the colors of Holi mean?
Meanings of the colors can vary but these are what the colors are generally associated with.
Red = love, Green = fresh starts, Yellow = happiness, Orange = new beginnings, Pink = beauty, Blue = the divine
Things We Do at Home
We like to read books that talk about Holi to the kids. The kids usually throw colored powder at each other. We also like to have a water fight with water balloons, a water table and water pump blasters. We make a tasty meal with some of our favorite Indian foods. Last year we made shahi tukre for dessert. Sometimes we like to make Holi cards, do a craft or do a science experiment.
For the Rainbow Skittles experiment you put Skittles in a circle around a plate. You pour warm water into the middle of the plate. Then you can see the colors move towards the middle of the plate.
Some things you may want to purchase for your own celebrations can be colored powders, water blasters or this book about Holi colors. These banners make a fun indoor decoration.
I am an Amazon affiliate.
Holi can also be a lot of fun if celebrated with others. I have listed below free events and events that have a fee in New Jersey in 2025. If going to an event that has color play be sure to get some garbage bags or covers for your car seats for the ride home.
