Our Experience at Welsh Heritage Day

We recently found out that there is some Welsh ancestry in my husband’s family. Our family was excited to visit the homestead for its Welsh Heritage Day. By visiting we were able to learn about different Welsh songs, learn about Welsh families in the area and learn about things related to Wales such as leeks. The leek is a national symbol of Wales that predates the daffodil.

Upon entering the house we were greeting with open hearth cooking and we were able to taste some shortbread. We learned of other traditional recipes that were being made throughout the day.

We went upstairs and sang along to some shanties by the Sea Dogs. Afterwards we went down to look at things such as the Welsh flag and Welsh love spoons. These were originally used to be carved by young men to give to a woman they were interested in. If they accepted the spoon this meant their relationship would begin. They were the origin for the word “spooning.” We also tried some Welsh tea that we put into our own tea bags along with other tea leaves of different flavors.

We then went to the kitchen where there was a whole spread of food laid out for people to try. We enjoyed tasting things such as We were impressed how the whole event was run by volunteers. We enjoyed the event and look forward to returning for future events at the house.
