The Ultimate Gift-Giving Guide
This time of year is when gift giving can cause a lot of stress. It can be hard to find the perfect gift that is useful and does not exceed your budget. This guide will help give you lots of gift ideas.
Shopping is one of my least favorite things to do. It seems like it can take a long time to find what you want and it is hard to tell how much you will use it. I have made this guide to tell you things we have used in our own house. These items I am recommending have all been used for a long time in our house. If you are shopping on a budget I have also included some of our favorite things from Dollar Tree in this guide as well.
The sections in this guide are: Travel & Experiences, Toys and Books (divided by Age Range), Unique Gifts for Kids, Games to Play as a Family and Gifts for Adults. Under each section there will be different categories of gift ideas with different themes. I hope you find this guide helpful in alleviating some of your shopping related stress!
Currently the email subscription for my Substack newsletter is free. This could make a great gift. I like to incorporate the thrifty ways we do things into my articles. I also try and incorporate educational things into many of them as well related to history and science. If you would like to make a donation to contribute to my fund for coffee chip milkshakes you can go to the bottom of the page here: Donate.
My worksheets are all discounted as well: Store. I am now starting consultations. If you think I can provide you with help in figuring out ideas for trips, activities or homeschooling you can currently book a twenty minute discounted consultation.
I partner with Stay22 and Travel Payouts. When booking through my links I receive a small commission that helps support my website. This is at no cost to you.
I updated this article to show Cyber Monday deals and discounts.
Many items that do not say they have a deal are already reasonably priced items.
Travel & Experiences
I am a travel writer so I hold things related to travel and experiences with the greatest weight.
As an affiliate with Travel Payouts I have access to these Black Friday Deals with Get Your Guide that you can take advantage of as well! Book incredible travel experiences such as museum tours, boat rides, camping trips and more.
Here are some travel ideas from our trips that you may enjoy. This year we spent a day on rides at Tivoli in Copenhagen. You could have a fun stay at the Generator Copenhagen like we did.
A couple years ago we danced to jazz music on the Steamboat Natchez in New Orleans. Save some money on food by staying at the Drury Plaza Hotel like we did.
If you want to purchase tickets to something near Christmas one great option is Longwood Gardens. It is beautiful around Christmas with the flowers and the giant organ. If you do not like the cold you can even spend most of your time in the Conservatory. Just be on the lookout for Colonel Mustard!
Another great Christmas option we had taken my daughter to in the past is Sesame Place. There are lots of great Christmas shows for young kids and the parades are a lot of fun.
I have not tried this Holiday Trolley Tour yet but this sounds like a fun way to see all the Christmas lights that I love in Philadelphia.
Plan a trip to Lauterbrunnen and Murren. These are amazing towns in Switzerland that were an inspiration for Rivendell to Tolkien. Stay at the lovely Hotel Edelweiss in Wengen where we stayed.
Read through some articles on my site to get more travel ideas. There are many others in the works!
Another good option for an experience is going to an upcoming game or concert. Ticketmaster usually has lots of options. Some groups we like that have upcoming shows include Third Eye Blind, Fall Out Boy, Snow Patrol, the Amish Outlaws and The Warped Tour Band. If you want to try something with your kids mine really enjoyed Jurassic Quest in the past.
Here are some other Black Friday Deals that I have found:
Hotels.com has lots of Black Friday sales. Deals are in locations such as San Diego, New York, New Orleans and Las Vegas. Learn more about our trip to New Orleans.
The Great Wolf Lodge has a black Friday sale. We have not tried staying here yet but multiple friends of ours have said their kids loved it at the Pennsylvania and Maryland locations.
Expedia has Black Friday sales and Travel Tuesday deals listed. Deals are in places such as Cozumel, Atlantic City and Tokyo.
Booking.com has Black Friday deals for bookings until December 4th. Deals are in places such as Orlando, Istanbul, Dubai and Paris. Getting a great deal on an Orlando hotel can cut costs for your next trip to Disney. If you decide to Paris be sure to also go on my favorite Hidden Paris bike tour.
RailEurope currently has 25% discounts for Eurail and Interrail passes until December 17th. I have used Eurail passes before for a trip where I traveled in the Netherlands, France, Monaco and Italy via train. I have also gotten a Eurail pass when I traveled to multiple places in France and Switzerland.
Hostel World has numerous Black Friday deals currently. Hostels we have stayed at before include the Generator Stockholm and the Next House Copenhagen.
Monster Jam currently has a Black Friday sale for 35% off tickets. This was one of our favorite events we attended before having kids. It is very entertaining. My favorite trucks are Blue Thunder, Max-D and El Toro Loco. If taking your kids be sure they have adequate hearing protection.
The Crayola Experience in Easton currently has a Black Friday sale until November 29th on their memberships where you can get an extra year for free. We just went here recently and my kids loved it (ages 5 and 7). I will add a link to my article about it here soon.
Sesame Place currently has a Black Friday sale on tickets. We visited here twice when the kids were younger. The kids had a great time. They really enjoyed the parades and shows the most.
Dutch Wonderland currently has a Black Friday sale. We visited last year around Christmas. The kids had a blast. They were loving all of the Christmas decor and funny shows. My daughter really liked the Merlin’s Mayhem ride.

Toys according to Age Range
Here are some gift ideas for the kids in your life:
Babies
Toys for Young Babies
When your baby is very young it can be hard to figure out how to interact with them. These are the best! Babies love them and they are easy to clean. It is fun to make up shows for your baby.
Sassy Peek-a-Boo Activity Book with Attachable Link (Cyber Monday Deal)
At first babies can only see black and white so this book is great. Both of my kids loved any books that also made crunchy sounds when they were younger. This one even has a hook so it is easy to attach to a diaper bag.
Music Toys
Wave Drum (Cyber Monday Deal)
If you go to any baby music times you will notice that these are what all the babies fight over. Be sure to get these for your own home. My kids have loved playing with this when we do music time.
Egg Shakers (Cyber Monday Deal)
These are another instrument that babies and toddlers love to use. They are helpful for teaching rhythm in songs.
Sesame Street Music Player Storybook
I really liked how this song book actually had the notes with the songs. The kids loved getting their first taste of having a “cd player.”
Vehicles
O Ball Cars Grippers Construction Crew
Babies love to push things around and these o ball cars were a favorite. They are very easy for babies to grasp. We had a fire truck one that my son loved. These construction ones look unique and fun as well.
Melissa and Doug Kids Pull Back Vehicle Set
These might say these are for babies but they are actually equally fun for adults. These things can move! Get them so you can have some fun as well!
Sesame Street Items
Are your kids fans of Sesame Street? Dollar Tree often carries lots of Sesame Street related things such as baby brushes, mini figures and bath books!
Books
Sandra Boynton is one of our favorite authors. Some of our favorite titles include the Going to Bed Book, Blue Hat Green Hat and Happy Birthday, Little Pookie. Her books offer entertainment for adults and kids who are reading them.
Toddlers
Active Toys
Little Tikes Cozy Shopping Cart Red/Yellow
This shopping cart has been a hit in our house. We have had other shopping carts but this one is by far the sturdiest and toughest to tip over. The little car in the front is great when the kids want to give their dolls or stuffed animals a ride. During the height of the pandemic we used this to film our own kid version of Supermarket Sweep.
V Tech Basketball Hoop and Soccer Net
While designed for smaller kids this is something that all ages can have fun with. It is fun to play with even if the sound is off. It is a great way to keep kids active during the colder months.
B. Toys On the Go Ride On Suitcase Woofer
This suitcase is great since you can store a lot of toys in it. My five year old still has fun riding it around the room. It can be a little tough to steer so it may be hard to use in an airport. We have used it a lot at home and when taking road trips to carry toys and other items. The kids love how the bone can unlock the suitcase.
Educational
Fisher Price Little People Farm Playset
The great thing about Little People Toys is that they can be enjoyed by a variety of ages. We have multiple different sets but our farm set has gotten the most replay. It has also been great since we have done a lot of homeschooling related to farms. The farm in the link is the newer version of our farm. This one has even more interesting features.
Leap Frog Magnetics Phonics Letter Sounds Set
This is a fun set that helps keep your kids occupied while you are in the kitchen. It is great for teaching them their letter sounds.
These crayons will change your life. When teaching your kids how to color when they are young you go through a lot of broken crayons. We were gifted a set of these and they were a game changer.
Yoga Kids and Animal Friends Boxed Set
Our kids love doing yoga. This was more difficult to do during the height of the pandemic. These books were a great way for us to do yoga at home. They have fun poses that are easy for kids to show. My son had fun leading yoga classes for us by using these books.
Building Toys
Mega Bloks First Builders - Low Price Right Now
Building with blocks is very important developmentally. These blocks are great since they are very easy to put together. I personally have fun with these as an adult as well. We also loved that they came with their own storage bag so they are easy to put away.
Green Toys Bouquet Stacking Flower Stacking Toy
These are flower toys that my kids have loved using since a young age. I found it helpful to use these in a sensory bin with some other toys such as sheep and ducks. They were also helpful when I was teaching my kids about the season of Spring when they were little.
Worried about putting up your Christmas tree? So is every other parent! Try putting up this one instead. Or you can also put this one up near your regular Christmas tree. We still put this up every year (my oldest is now seven). The kids love that they can set it up and decorate it themselves as many times as they want. It is fun to play with the train at the bottom.
Preschoolers
Traveling over the holidays? Dollar Tree has these small Etch a Sketch boards that can help kids stay busy in the car: Etch a Sketch Mini Doodle.
Food Related Toys
Melissa and Doug Sandwich Counter
For the past few years whenever the kids go to their cousins house they love playing with this set. It is definitely a hit for multiple ages.
Leap Frog Scoop and Learn Ice Cream Cart for 24 months to 60 months
This ice cream cart is a lot of fun. Everything is easy to store inside the cart. My kids love making ice cream orders for other people with this cart. I personally have fun using the scooper as well. The only issue I have found is that since it only has two wheels that made it a little tougher to push around. We put felt on the stand part without wheels and this solved the issue.
Educational
Button Nail - (Cyber Monday Deal)
This looks very similar to a set we were gifted. This is great for kids to do by themselves in quiet time. It is great for them to be able to practice matching colors.
Easel for Kids (Has a 15% coupon)
We had received our easel for free on a Buy Nothing Group but it looks fairly similar to this one. An easel is a must when you have kids. It is great for teaching them things, doing artwork and more. During the height of the pandemic we also used it to write out menus for our “restaurant meals” we made at home.
It is useful to have the chalk and dry erase side. The shelf on the bottom is great for a spot to keep art supplies.
Magnetic Daily Calendar - Cyber Monday Deal
I did preschool homeschooling for four years. This is very similar to the calendar we purchased. It helped to add some structure to the start of our mornings. I liked the fact that it was magnetic and there were a few different categories of daily things that this taught the kids.
Kids Learning Sticker Activity Books
Dollar Tree has lots of different educational tools and worksheet books. Sticker learning books such as the ones above have been favorites with my kids.
Welcome to French with Sesame Street
This is a great book for teaching your preschooler some basic French. We used it before going to Quebec and my kids were loving using this book to practice their French beforehand. Older kids may enjoy this French Phrasebook for Kids or My First French Phrases which we also liked using.
Dress Up Supplies
Do your kids like to dress up at home? Refresh their costume supply with some cool Dollar Tree finds. Some things we have loved include these dinosaur hats we have worn to a lot of Dinosaur themed events and this bee skirt since we attend a lot of events with beekeepers.
Elementary School Aged Kids
Building Sets
Picasso Tiles 100 Piece Magnetic Tiles Set - Cyber Monday Deal
If you go to kid sections in libraries, magnetic tiles are always the rage. This is the starter set that we started out with. We liked it since it came with a big number of tiles and was already in a box.
There are a lot of expansion sets that you can get with them which is great when you need gift ideas to tell other people. These are the two that we own and like:
Picasso Tiles Expansion Set - Cyber Monday Deal
We like this expansion set since this helped add windows and quarter round pieces to our set. The curved pieces helped us make the Rainbow Road out out of our Magnetic Tiles.
Picasso Tiles Expansion Set: Cars - Cyber Monday Deal
My son loves anything with wheels so getting these made a lot of sense. The pieces connect as well so it is easy to make a train or a car.
Picasso Tiles Tubular Pipes - Cyber Monday Deal
My kids were gifted a similar pipe set to these a few years ago and they love them! They are great for them to use during their quiet time.
Educational Toys
Sesame Street Elmo’s On the Go Letters in a Suitcase
My son received these as a gift and they were a huge hit. The letters are fun to snap into place. It is a great start for making words. It is easy to carry around this set around the house.
Learning Resources Snap-n-Learn Alphabet Alligators Uppercase and Lowercase Letters - (Cyber Monday Deal)
Our library has a set of these and the kids love matching up all of these alligators together every time we go there.
Learning Resources Time Activity Set
This set is useful if you are helping teach your kids time on an analog clock and a digital one.
Leap Frog Magic Adventures Globe (Lowest price in 30 days)
Our kids love this globe. It came in handy during the Paris Olympics since it was easy to point out countries to the kids. This is one of the few things they enjoy playing with independently. It is a great learning resource.
Books
Are your kids in 1st or 2nd grade? They might enjoy these Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys books available at Dollar Tree.
The Kingdom of Wrenly is a great fantasy series that my daughter avidly read from the library. The nice thing is that the protagonists are a boy and a girl. If you only want to purchase one book in the series then this one is her favorite since it involves a baby dragon. (Get 3 for the price of 2 currently)
The Dragon Girls is another series that my daughter enjoys that you may want to check out.
If your kids like animals they may enjoy one of these Who Would Win? books. My daughter always likes predicting which animal would win in the different scenarios. (Get 3 for the price of 2 currently)
If they are a fan of science the Magic School Bus books are always a hit with both of my kids. We were lucky enough to get quite a few for cheap at a library book sale.
This Lonely Planet Kids Amazing World Atlas is a great starter one for kids. It has lots of pictures and I like to peruse its pages myself.
My daughter has really enjoyed this Ready to Read: Around the World Collection. It is from the viewpoints of kids in different countries so it is more relatable. At the end of each book there is also a page of country facts.
Do you have kids who don’t love reading but they do love Pokemon? Getting one of these books is a must to help expand their reading skills. Get The Pokemon Classic Collector’s Handbook if you are interested in the first 151 Pokemon. (Get 3 for the price of 2 currently)
The Super Extra Deluxe Essential Handbook is great if you want to know about 875 of them.
Other Gift Ideas
LCD Writing Tablets (Cyber Monday Deal)
Do your kids always like to write or draw things? Are they going through reams of paper? These boards were amazing for us. The kids love using them and they are great for teaching them new words and other things as well.
Make It Blocks Compartmentalized Storage Cases for Legos
Do your kids have some smaller Lego sets? These have fit our small sized Lego Friends sets perfectly. We have three of them and each fit into these boxes perfectly. The best part is that the top of the box can be built on as well! This is an example of a smaller Lego Friends set that we own.
Pokemon Battle Academy Board Game
This game is great for teaching kids how to play the Pokemon card game. After playing a few times they can easily play on their own. It is very well laid out. It is also awesome that this comes with three decks of cards. This makes game play easy and a lot more equitable. The game helps with math skills.
Pokemon Card Binder (Cyber Monday Deal)
If your kid likes to collect cards and display or trade them then one of these Pokemon card binders can be useful. My husband and I use them for our own cards.
Small Gifts
Health and Hygiene
Kid Toothpaste and Kid Toothbrushes
These Dollar Tree items make great gifts for kids. They are useful and you do not have to keep them for a long time.
My kids love these bath scrubbers with different animal heads. They usually change throughout the year.
Help your kid get over their chagrin over a boo boo with one of these cute Band-aids from Dollar Tree.

Five Below has some of the coolest candies that kids will love. These include things like Haribo Happy Cola gummies or Swedish Fish.
Unique Gifts that are not Toys
Lunch Time Fun
Thermos Funtainer Water Bottle with Straw & Thermos Funtainer Water Bottle (Cyber Monday Deal)
I feel like when we were kids we must have been dehydrated all of the time. Now kids carry water everywhere they go which is great! These water bottles are our favorite. Kids can make friends right away with others due to the cute characters on them. They are easy to wash and get replacement straws.
Thermos Funtainer Food Jar - Cyber Monday Deal
These are great for packing leftovers for your lunch. If you want to keep your food hotter first fill the jar with boiling hot water for a bit before putting the food in. The thing I love the most about these is that a foldable spoon is already included which can be kept in the top of the container.
Licensed Character Plastic Sandwich Containers with Lids
Licensed products do not always have to be expensive. We have four of these containers from Dollar Tree that we love to use for sandwiches at lunch. They have fun lids such as BB-8, Paw Patrol and Baby Shark. Our oldest one has been going strong for eight years now.
Pororo Edison Training Chopsticks
Penguin Edison Training Chopsticks
These are the chopsticks we got for my son and daughter when they both started learning at the age of 3. They were able to use them right away and loved the cute designs. I highly recommend them.
Art Related Things
How to Draw Simple Drawings Book
We had a similar book to this that we had purchased from the Target Dollar Spot a few years ago. This was a hit since the kids had fun being able to try drawing different things themselves.
Melissa and Doug Scissor Skills Activity Book
My kids had so much fun with this book. To them it was like creating their own toys. The only downside was that the scissors that came with it did not cut very well.
My kids have been doing virtual drawing classes with me for the past couple of years. They had wanted sketchbooks of their own. We found these great ones at Dollar Tree. You can even put one of your drawings in the front cover.

Baby Playpens
KidZone Baby Playpen ($10 coupon right now)
This was the play pen we used when the kids were little. We found pack n plays impossible to leave them in since they usually wanted someone in there with them. This is great since you can make it bigger or smaller. Adults can go inside as well and once the baby is playing for awhile they are usually more ok with you going and doing other things.
Little Tikes Activity Garden Playhouse for Babies, Infants and Toddlers
We liked this for our kids since it did not take up much space and it seemed to keep them engaged for awhile. We would usually set it up in the square configuration and this helped them learn to pull themselves up and stand really quickly. The kids still like playing with their stuffed animals inside this sometimes.
Jingle Bell Bracelets
These bracelets from the Dollar Tree are great for a Christmas present. Kids love just shaking their hands to ring the bells on their wrists.
Furniture
Bookshelves are always worth getting so that books are not strewn about your entire house. They can also be helpful for storing board games or magazines. We like these Fantasy Fields bookshelves for our kids. This one is a newer model of the fire truck one we already own.
Art tables are helpful to have if your kids love to do artwork or writing. We liked this one from KidKraft that we got since it was taller than most others we came across.

Protect the Penguin from Five Below is a great game. Kids and adults of all ages love to play this. It is fun to hit the ice and hope the penguin does not fall through.

This game is a classic for a reason. It is great for family meetups since it is easy to pack and for people of all different ages to play.
Monopoly Deal - (Cyber Monday Deal)

This game is always fun to play if you have a group of people. It is always entertaining to see which cards people will pick.
Are you playing with kids who can’t read yet? We also like this Apples to Apples: Picture Time game in our family.
Games that Involve Spelling
Have kids that are too young for Scrabble? This game is still fun to play. There is an easy and hard side. The easy side they can play as long as they know their letters.
Upwords Stackable Letter Board Game (Low Price Right Now)
Upwords and Bananagrams are two fun games to play as a family. If you like Scrabble these games are similar but even more fast paced. Younger kids may also be able to play along if they are on a team.
Other Fun Games
When my daughter was sick in the hospital one time there was a doctor kind enough to give her this game to take home. She has loved it ever since. It is a classic game that is fun to play for any age. It is tougher than you would think.
There are lots of different versions of this game. We had gotten the Ticket to Ride First Journey Europe for our kids before our trip to Denmark and Sweden. This helped teach them about the different capital cities in Europe. My five year old loved the trains that were a part of the game. There are different versions for adults as well.

This game is great since it gets kids up and moving. They are more likely to dance since they are seeing other kids dancing.

These Dollar Tree kitchen scissors are pretty heavy duty. Ours have held up well for ten years now.
Anolon Achieve Hard Anodized Nonstick Cookware Pots and Pans Set - (Cyber Monday Deal)
Our set looks different than these since we had received it as a gift eleven years ago. They have held up much better than other pots and pans we have. There is a limited lifetime warranty. So far we had to throw out one of our pans and another we were able to get replaced through the warranty. We thought this was really good considering the length of time that we have been using them.
Automotive Gifts
The Dollar Tree has a great automotive section. It may be fun to put a few things together as a gift such as this Windshield Washer fluid or this Armor All Multi Purpose Cleaner spray.
