What is Safety Town?
Hamilton PAL Safety Town is a 2 week summer safety program in Hamilton, NJ that has been going on for over 20 years!
Where is Safety Town?
It is located behind the Hamilton Township Public Library in New Jersey.
Address: 1 Justice Samuel Alto Jr Way Hamilton, NJ 08619
Who can attend?
It is for kids that are five years old and/or attending kindergarten in the fall.
Who runs the camp?
It is run by the Hamilton Police Athletic League. There are lots of kids who are counselors for the camp as well. The campers wear red shirts and the counselors wear green shirts.
What is the cost?
The camp costs $100. The cost includes a t-shirt, lanyard with ID and a certificate.
Where is pick-up and drop-off?
Last year we had dropped off kids at the entrance of Safety Town. This was behind the library when you walked around the left hand side. There was a small gazebo with seating near this area. Afterwards kids could be picked up in the basement of the library.
On the first day parents stayed for a bit at the beginning to go over the rules of the program.
What to Pack
I sent my son with a backpack that had a snack, water and his helmet each day. I had him wear sneakers and a hat. We put on sunblock before camp each day. Campers are given shirts and a card with their information on a lanyard they are told to wear each day.
Our Experience
Prior to attending Safety Town my son had only done one hour homeschool classes away from me before. I was worried about how he would adjust. He ended up loving it right away! He loves anything with wheels so this camp was a great fit for him.
Almost every day campers would get to ride on pedal go-karts around a small town behind the library. The town had sidewalks, streets, buildings and road signs. It even had a working traffic light! They even had fun visits by things like a school bus and a fire truck. My son had not been interested in coloring before attending Safety Town. While attending he started to love coloring and could not wait to show us his pictures of traffic lights and buses.
During the camp kids were also taught about different safety topics and songs related to them. Some of the topics covered were things like bike safety, bus safety, and pedestrian safety. At the end there was even a small graduation ceremony that parents could attend. We watched the kids perform the songs. Afterwards there was a celebration outside with Kona Ice in Safety Town itself.
The camp had a great counselor to kid ratio. The counselors were great at doing fun things such as playing Duck, Duck, Go with the kids. The officers were all really friendly and great at teaching the kids. I thought this was a great way to introduce things to my son that he would need to know such as his address. At the end of camp we were even given a checklist with the things that were covered.
Safety Town has real small structures. There are roads, street signs and a traffic light!

What Can Parents do while their kids are at Safety Town?
Parents can stay at the Hamilton Township Public library while their kids are at Safety Town. There are plenty of spots to get work done. The library often has great book sales in the summer and good summer reading program events for younger kids. Be sure to sign up for the summer reading program with your child while you are there.
Hamilton is also one of my favorite towns to visit. Here are some of my favorite things to do there: Hamilton Hot Spots. Another great spot is Veterans Park. It is so large that it can take a couple days to explore.
